Horse Rides
There are several alternative ways to get about in the high country and one of the most popular is on horseback like the mountain's early pioneers. There are lots of fantastic tours and trips for all ages and abilities including trips to Craig's Hut and 
Summit tours. There's day trips and well as over night treks.
High Country Horses is nestled in the foothills of Merrijig. Owner/operator Chris Dunlop has been in the area for over 30 years and taking commercial trail rides up into the breathtaking Victorian High country for 15 years. With 60 horses, they have horses to suit all level of riders and the flexibility to adjust the ride according to your ability. Their rides range from 2 hours to multi days.
Their shorter rides, our main area of operation is through the foothills of Merrijig. Ride through Dead Wood Forest as featured in 'The Man from Snowy River'. splashing through creeks and enjoying the serenity of the natural bush where the wild life abounds.
Tours operates: 9:30am 3:30pm daily
Short rides run Spring to Autumn - first ride for the day at 9.30 a.m. - last ride leaving 3.30 p.m.
2 hour ride - $50 per person Half day ride - $75 per person Day ride - $170 per person 2 day ride - $380 per person

2 Hour Ride
Departing from picturesque Merrijig property where McCormack's have farmed for many generations
Ride up into the Buttercup valley where you may well recognize the views form the Man from Snowy River films, as they were filmed here in the area. Traversing the ridges under Mt Buller, Timbertop, No.3 and Mt Stirling, you will venture deeper into the natural bush and may see the native wildlife as they go about their movements during the day. Warming into the saddle you may like to pick the pace up a little and there are plenty of chances to trot and canter along the bush tracks. You will cross some of the many creeks and depending or the route taken on the ride we may ford the Delatite River as we turn and head for home.
Half Day Ride
This ride is similar to the 2 hour ride except you will explore the valley further to take in the dramatic Dead Wood City fa¬mous from The Man from Snowy River 2 film, and we will cross higher up the valley and stop for a short break to rest the horses and take in some of the best views from the area,
Day Ride of a Lifetime to Craig's Hut (Nov to May)
Re-live the movies and ride to Craig's Hut, the set where 'The Man from Snowy River' was filmed.
The day starts from King's Saddle on Mt Stirling itself, saddle up and head off through the magnificent Woolybutt forest to the famous hut. Ride on through the gnarled snow gums, as your horse picks his way along the cattle tracks while every-one finds their balance and warms into the saddle, you come out of the trees to ride over the short springy mountain turf in awe of the stunning views at the hut itself.
